The most commonly used is the local anesthetic: the injection given in the mouth to numb the areas where a tooth or area needs a dental procedure.
To eliminate the discomfort associated with injections and in order to minimalise the pain, a topical anesthetic fruit-flavoured gel (strawberry, wildberry, banana) can be applied to tissues prior to injection, so that the patient doesn’t even have to feel the needle. Stress and anxiety can be dealt with with the help of the Nitrous Oxide or “laughing gas” for relaxation, which can often reduce the pain, which is aggravated by the fear associated with shots or dental procedures. Nitrous oxide works with adult patients as well as children. In some cases, in order to eliminate the need for intimidating drills and surgical instruments, a Swedish gel formula called Carisolv, can be applied to melt cavities.
However, if none of these methods is acceptable to the patient, a dental procedure can be carried out under the general anaesthesia. In this case all necessary dental procedures will be done during only one visit. The general anaestesia is always applied under the supervision of a team of doctors, following a thorough examination and preparation of the patient.
